Duryee's Zouaves

This painting by Winslow Homer, called the Briarwood Pipe, accurately captures the details of the uniform of Duryee's Zouaves (5^th New York Infantry). A white turban was sometimes worn around the fez. These men are not pictured wearing the distinctive sash around their waist. Notice the leather greaves worn over the shins and the gaiters worn over the shoes. This unit was one of the early Zouave regiments and compiled an outstanding record of service. Each Zouave regiment had its individual distinct dress and that of the 5^th was considered to be a good copy of an authentic French uniform.
