Letter "J"

Although there was no company "J" in the Army organization table, the letter exists and likely was used as part of an abbreviation of a unit nickname or state. The letter "R" is also fairly common found and stood for rifles in a unit nickname. Photographs show Civil War soldiers wearing many different interesting nonregulation groups of letters and numbers on their hats.
