Union Army Uniforms and Insignia of the Civil War
Heavy Artillery Private's Uniform
Private Dressed in a Sack Coat
3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery
|
Detail of Kepi
|
This unidentified heavy artillery private is wearing a four button sack coat with a vest underneath.
Of greater interest is his forage cap (kepi) which was a small pair of crossed cannons with number
three above and the letters "H" and "A" on either side. The crossed cannon appear to be smaller that
the common issued artillery insignia. The letters indicate heavy artillery and the number the third
regiment. The letters appear to be of
a fancy type known as "Zouave" letters and are not the regulation issued type, which are one inch in height. These are offered in the period Schuyler, Hartley and Graham catalog.
