Signal Officers 1865
In 1861 there was only one signal officer, Major Albert J. Myer, who is dressed in civilian
clothing and standing next to the flag pole in this photograph. He was a Army surgeon, who became
interested in military communications. The Signal Corps was established as a provisional
branch only and its personnel were detailed from line units on detached service. By the end of the Civil War the Signal Corps had grown
to 168 officers and 1350 enlisted men. Colonel Myer and his successor both ran afoul of Secretary
Stanton and were replaced.
