Civil War Shoulder Straps

Lt. Colonel's Strap

Lieutenant Colonel's Shoulder Strap

Many Civil War shoulder straps do not conform to regulations, but this one does. It was worn by William H. Silsby of the 10th Iowa Infantry. The leaves are silver and the border is one-quarter inch gold bullion. It contains both dead and bright bullion alternating around the border. The field is a medium blue color and is darker than many other infantry insignia. Each regiment had one lieutenant colonel.
