Union Army Uniforms and Insignia of the Civil War

Officer's Grade (Rank) Insignia

Major's Shoulder Strap
Staff Major's Shoulder Strap

This strap conforms to the regulations. Multiple regulations read the same for a staff major shoulder strap during the period 1851-1912. Dating a staff strap to period is as much an art as science. Staff officers includes all of the officers who were assigned to duties other than combat arms (line officers) and included officers of the regimental staff, such as surgeons and quartermasters. Members of higher level staffs and various departments, such as the corps of engineers and ordnance, would also wear staff straps.
